Radia

Radia is an international, informal network of radio stations who produce, share and broadcast radio art works. Since its inception in 2005 it has promoted a weekly radio art programme, each station taking turns in asking an artist of its choice to produce a radio art piece to be broadcast on all network stations. Besides this ongoing effort, Radia stations also participate and produce radio art programmes in the context of festivals and other contexts. More can be found about Radia at http://radia.fm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radia.

In January 2019 there were 26 stations in the network, representing 19 different countries.

Paul B. Preciado calls for the universal use of dildos in order to denaturalize sexuality, to infect it with a thing that is not a copy of a penis but an object that is both a way to appropriate the ass as the universal passive and non-reproductive organ that all people have and a way to multiply sexual acts, distributing them throughout the whole body. In this radio show, simply called “OM 29 – Co-Fi-Re (Conceptual Field Recording) 2”, I’ve tried to create an analogon to this notion of...

Show 600: Special Collage by Chuse Fernandez (Tea FM) 600 is a wonderful number. Can you hear it? The Radia Network emerged from a series of meetings, clandestine events, late night club discussions and a lot of email exchanges between cultural radio producers across Europe. The topics vary and the reasons for forming a network are many, but Radia has become a concrete manifestation of the desire to use radio as an art form. The approaches differ, as do the local contexts; from commissioned...

TATIN ! Let’s start with the recipe ! Collective realization of a sound-culinary experience The practice of sound can be conceived, thought and realized in a body, in a spirit, an author, an artist. But the sound can also be shared. And what’s better than the pleasures of the mouth to get in touch with the sound material. These sound materials brought by the participants of the Sound Studies of this season, are staged, implemented within a recipe that has become a graphic score. Everyone...

Is it as disrespectful to record the sound of the temple gong as it feels to photograph the scene? And in the process, is it thus disrespectful to record the Russian tour guide, and the screaming child, and the power tool, and rustle of velcro from camera bags? The syllable “spect” within respect is the same as in spectate, spectacle. Respectus via old French and thus Latin: the action of looking back. This implication of the seen within respect, does it let listening off the hook? Is it...

Bauhaus.fm is a student initiative in Weimar, Germany, with a weekly broadcast slot on local FM community Radio Lotte. Most students are connected to the unique chair of “experimental radio” at Bauhaus University. For this summer semester guest tutor Knut Aufermann invited his course participants to produce a guest show for the Radia network. Instead of following a linear compositional approach, the spectrum of human hearing range was divided into five discrete frequency bands for which...

The word “Glitch” is everywhere those days. In movies and TV shows, in clubs and galeries, on billboards, in magazines and all around the social network. Most people see it as a Digital failure, at best as a nice effect or plot device. But it’s so much more: Some kind of natural accuring Digital art. A new dynamic in modern Electronic music. A way to breech the boundries of the (Computer) system. A crack in the Utopian facade and a way to exploid the unknown possibilities of imperfection....

Show 595: Quinnilicious by CFRC This CFRC produced show had one contributor this time around, our own Quinn Giordano (The Programming Manager provided the name for this episode). Quinn provided five pieces, in order, with explanations: Overcast Soul “Overcast Soul” was composed as the result of a very long stretch of grey days prior to the first holiday break of my first year at Queen’s University. An exam season spent studying through the nights and meandering off to strange corners of...

In this piece, 'Trajectory', devised by Milo Thesiger-Meacham, he and Patryk Gierczak very simply explore miscommunication. Recorded simultaneously in two separate studios, without any communication or forethought, this experiment relied only on the musicians being able to hear each other's sounds. Produced by Milo Thesiger-Meacham, in association with Resonance FM. Painting by Milo Thesiger-Meacham. Engineered by George Rayner-Law.

During the shortest night of 2018, ten students from bauhaus.fm set out to make slow radio from various locations in the city of Weimar in Germany. The recordings of these six hours are chopped up and recombined for Radia, using Dieb13’s software ‘Schnitzel’. Laura Dang and Lefteris Krysalis interlaced a random Schnitzel cut with a more musical one. The outcome of this process is called “Cold Cuts”. Produced by Dieb13, Laura Dang and Lefteris Krysalis. Acoustic Measurings of the City.” By and with Nayarí Castillo, Reni Hofmüller, Miriam Raggam, Hanns Holger Rutz for Radio Helsinki, Graz The city is the place where we live. What better way to know James Joyce than his invented words. He was born in Rathgar, on the outskirts of Dublin, in 1882. Although he spent much of his life living and working on the continent — he died in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1941 — Joyce maintained close ties with Ireland, and used it as the setting for all of his major literary works, including  A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man  (1916),  Ulysses  (1922) and Finnegan’s Wake  (1939). Known for his playful and endlessly...

The Dirty Dozen This is the first Radia contribution out of Luxembourg. A dozen people got together to discover new ways of recording and radio making, thrilled by the infinite possibilities of radio art and wildly making use of any recording device they found. Intentionally focusing on sounds, noises and voices that usually just form the background of recordings – or are not recorded at all. Distracting reverbs, deformed languages, distortions and alien sound worlds have been surrounding us...

The Lebanese artist Kinda Hassan decrypts the Marseille "kaleidoscope" through a sound installation entitled "Ex Nihilo (nihil fit), nothing comes from nothing", questioning the different stories that mask the contemporary facade of the city.   In her sound painting, Kinda Hassan presents the city and its port as a subject and its mirror, revealing original details often assigned today to the margin, to oblivion. These are details illustrating a daily life marked by life at...

2015 I had the opportunity to visit Bosch researching field the first time and the amazing Platform12. This is a new planet, a freer place for creation under strickt circumstances of a huge factory as Bosch. My idea was to connect this organism through the first layer, the skin: the text. To research all the written communication and the unique Bosch-language with codes, secrets and word-creations. I was also very curious about how this organism functions, how we receive the language, so to sum...

Hymne aux scories (literally Anthem to scoriae) is made of plundered European nations anthems, spoken words and noise generator. Hymne aux scories is a kind of photographic DIY: snapshots that would look at each other, stolen and ready for transformation. According to Eva Jacobi, “This is concerned with what have now left us: a paradoxical essence of the phenomenon of communication _and always-renewed disorder. These radiographic pictures come from the best and the worth, so as to present...
